During the month of May, Hoch Construction made tremendous progress preparing the site for new construction. Although much of the old building and the many storage buildings on the property were removed, the concrete slab, several concrete walls, and some of the wood framed walls remain and will be built upon.
To help the project meet LEED Silver standards, Hoch salvaged as much from the building as they could before demolition began. Everything from windows and cabinets to garden pavers were salvaged to be reused elsewhere. In the photos below you can see that during the demolition process, the excavator has sorted materials into piles — metal, plastic, wood, and concrete — so that it can be recycled or disposed of appropriately.
Excavation around the building also revealed just how high the dirt berms were around three sides of the building (6 feet high in places!) and just how much of the site was covered by berms. Gaining that space back around the building and opening walls for new windows and daylight will be a huge improvement.
