Make a Splash: Read!

Dive into summer reading!

"Make a splash – READ!" is the theme of the North Olympic Library System’s 2010 summer reading program. This annual program encourages kids to continue reading during summer when school is out by offering free events and prizes. Beginning Monday, June 21st and ending August 7, children throughout Clallam County are invited to sign up for the program at any of the four North Olympic Libraries: Port Angeles, Clallam Bay, Forks, and Sequim.

Did you know that, in what is called the "summer slide," children who do not read over the summer can lose up to a month of learning from the previous year? According to the New York State Library, children who read six books during the summer have a greater likelihood of retaining the level of proficiency they achieved in the previous year. NOLS’ summer reading program gives children and teens a positive experience with books and reading and increases their awareness of the library as a resource for information. And it’s lots of fun, too!

When: June 21-August 7th

Who: Children ages 0-12 in Clallam County

Where: Any North Olympic Library System Library (Forks, Clallam Bay, Sequim, Port Angeles)

To get a prize:

  1. Read (or be read to) for three hours.
  2. Complete a summer reading activity.
  3. Color in a circle and stop at the Library for a prize.
  4. Complete 15 hours of reading and five activities to be entered into a grand prize drawing.

Cost? Free!
